Advent drawings are back! And only a wee bit late.

I used to deliberately forget to open my advent calendar for a few days so I got a few more chocolates in one sitting. Missing the whole point of the advent calendar, you say? Yep. But I know for a fact I'm not the only one.

I decided that for this years theme... Batman! Starting with the Joker's moll, Harley Quinn. Only just noticed how that pool que handle probably isn't the best for a hammer... ah, well, I'll give her a more sturdy one for Christmas, if she's good. Oh wait...

And here's hoping, despite the minor delay, that I keep it up this year!

Back in Hamilton for a while, so decided to play with the new laptop and scanner Dad just got. I hadn't scanned Mum's birthday present from last year, so thought I might as well. Good excuse to update the ol' blog while I'm at it. I find scanners always mess up marker colours to some extent, and I'm not sure how it might look on other screens...

Flipped it over and realised that her legs and face were wonky. I've heard of people flipping their drawings to check for mistakes for a while now, but only just gotten into the habit of doing it. Stupid really, it's incredibly useful and I wish I'd done it sooner!

I did have a go at some more shading, but realised that I liked it better like this. The background is my usual half-assed affair.

Well, long time no-post! Hopefully to mark the start of more regular posting, here is roughly my start to finish on Kid Icarus, which I made into a print for D-Con (Still some left!) It's missing a few exploratory scribbles, but here's the meat of the thing


Rough drawing in blue col-erase pencil. Not too happy with those feet...

Traced the rough with a violet col-erase with altered right foot


Coloured in mostly with Letraset markers and a touch of Crayola coloured pencils.

Add background and texture in photoshop, fiddle about with the colours, and hey presto!

Marceline (The Vampire Queen)

Lately I've been feeling a little uninspired, drawing-wise. One thing I find often helps is a bit of fanart. It's sort of lazy I suppose - the character has been pre-designed, personality and attitudes already thought out by the creators... but it's quite fun to draw them in a different way. Relaxing, really.

I haven't tried to draw anyone from the show "Adventure Time" before... the cartoon is fairly bizarre, but often very funny (in a random sort of way). I think it's something that's best watched with at least one other person. I didn't like the look of it at first, but I warmed to it fairly quickly.

This here is Marceline. She's only been in three episodes so far, and she's quite an interesting character. Everyone may have met a Marceline type character. Seems cool... then you think, wait, she's actually a bit of a dick... then find she's actually quite nice... but not too nice. Keeps you on your toes, and to be honest, I don't usually have the patience for people like that. But what the hell, felt like drawing her. Also, she mostly leviates about the place, which is fun to draw =)

Moleskines... I'm so afraid to draw on them. Well you would when they're so expensive. I rarely draw in it, I want every drawing in it to be beautiful (doesn't always happen).

I do have a habit of, when hearing about certain sketchbooks, pens etc. that my favourite artists use, I want them. As if by using them they'll instantly make me better. Well, it does help to have good materials, but I'm really scared of using them! I'm often more loose when I'm drawing with cheaper stuff anyway =)

Warm-ups

Warm-up sketches for the two pictures in the previous post...

Used the fashion part of a magazine for help with Kirsten's picture. I didn't want the girl to be Kirsten, but not unlike her.
I was really stuck for quite a while trying to think up an idea for what to draw her. She likes clothes and shopping, and unlike me has the money to do it. That's all I could think of. I hate to think what I'm going to do her next year, If I can think of anything...

Post-its are so handy for stuff like this. The head in the oringinal drawing was all wrong, but I liked the rest of it. Enter the post-it. Used this image to trace onto the watercolour paper in a light 3H pencil.

Some watercolour tests. I should have done much more, but I left it too late. Little self portrait in the bottom left-hand corner. It's nice to have a bit of colour =)

I got distracted by the urge to draw a vampy lady.
I was surprised at how tricky I found drawing Jessie at first. Her arms are particularly gard when you have to really think about how the stitching behaves when she moves her arms.

Tom pointed out that she looked a bit off-balance, and of course he was right! And I was just about to trace it for the final drawing, so good save =)

Birthday presents for my sister and her friend.

I rarely do many "finished" pieces, mostly doodles and sketches. I always get frustrated if what started out as a nice pencil sketch gets mucked up when I try to ink it or add colour. For instance, I don't think Jessie looked so stiff in my warm-up drawing of her. I'm sure that just mean I have to focus on practising inking and colour more. Lazy Lynsey.

Have been to see toy Story 3 three times now -2D every time. The price is enough to put me off, but apart from "How to Train Your Dragon" (a film I loved and can't wait to get it on dvd), I haven't seen much point in seeing a film in 3D =\

Tempted to mess around a bit more with watercolours =)

A character I thought up, called Fuzil (Foo-zil). His name doesn't have any meaning other than sounding cute and a bit mysterious. this is one of the first drawings of him. In my head he was a bit like Casper the ghost, but a demon.

It's been a while, blog. Over a year. I can only apologise for neglecting you, but I've been busy. Looking back though, I should have been busier. Updating you. However, when it comes to scanning drawings, I can become incredibly slothful. Then I stop liking them and don't particularly want to share them. Then I forget about it, and find something else to occupy my time with.

Very 80s anime. Was drawn in by the fun looking opening, but I tried watching he first few episodes and wasn't terribly impressed. Still, I her character design.

Yup, I've recently become a fan of Akira Toriyama. Dr. Slump and the first three or four volumes of Dragonball are great - fun, silly and well drawn. Why oh why did he have to become so caught up in the fighting, muscles and aliens, so prominent in Dragonball Z?! Dragonball Z is only any good in its Abridged version - hi-larious

She pops into my head

This is a character that's been in my head for..... man, must be years now. She's gone through many changes in appearance, personality, surroundings etc., but still keeps a consistent sort of essence (that right now I can't put into words). She's probably going to go through more changes before I can pin her down... but part of me doesn't really want to do that. I guess she's a free spirit!

Anyway, I've been thinking about her a lot recently (she always seems to pop into my head during holidays). I've got a rough idea of what I'm going to do with her now, with other characters and such. I plan on scanning in other sketches, but above is something I already had on the computer. In my mind, she isn't usually as sweet as she looks above (it was just something simple to sketch, ink and colour).

Maybe I'll share some of my ideas about her on this blog, for what it's worth. I'm caught between eagerness and reluctance of showing her to the world. I don't know what's worse, my ideas and drawing being cruelly criticised, or staying in obscurity.

Got a new haircut yesterday - it's pretty short!

I was kinda scared to show my dad, as he thinks long hair is better, but he said it was lovely. Now he's just referring to me as "Baldy". Fathers.....

Apologies for poor quality of pictures (webcam), but it doesn't really matter as I look terrible in pictures anyway! These two aren't too bad.

It's my Dad's birthday tomorrow (he's going to be 52, but he doesn't look it ^_^). Anyway, that means I have to make a card for him (not that it's a chore or anything, I love doing it!). I was originally going to do a Tom and Jerry card, as they're his very very favourite, but I got this idea of a cute daddy's-little-girl image instead whilst looking at pages from a Flintstones Golden Book (I think it was on a certain Mel Crawford's blog).

I tried to capture the painting style of the illustrations...and pretty much failed. I am also going to use the age old excuse of "my scanner totally ruined the colours"...'cos it's true.

Also, I used a photo of me lying on my dad's chest when I was a newborn for reference....I would post it for comparison, but my dad happens to be shirtless in it and I'm not sure he would want me to put it on the internet anyway.

I've been trying to get into using watercolours, so here's a sexy yet nipple-less genie. I kinda like it, but I admit that it's generic. I wasn't really focussing on what she looked like, more the colour. Which is blue. 'Cos genies=blue is imprinted in my mind.

Doodles galore part 1

Big, big mass of doodles from over the past two weeks.

Lots of girls. Lots of very similar looking girls. And I'm really just trying to imitate the way Katie Rice and Kali Fontecchio draw girls (among a whole host of great artists to be found in blogs or on Cartoon Retro). I adore the way they draw, but I think I really need to find new artists in the hope that I find new ways to draw. I don't want to be the girl who tries to copy Katie Rice (for example), but that seems to be the way I'm going.

Also, I may have posted a lot of drawings, but I think it's clear that I'm stuck in a rut - without thinking I find myself drawing what are basically the same girly characters with the same features, expressions, emotions (if any).....moan moan, whinge whinge and so on, and so on....

So why the hell am I posting these if all I'm going to do is berate them? Well, with any luck, it can show how I'm progressing and give me a kick up the rear (wow, you suck! better change that!). or even have someone tell me where I'm going wrong. And to be completely honest, I quite like some of these.

This one here is Fujiko from Lupin III, my current favourite manga. And now the digital process! (which I'm still learning)

Inspiration partly from a girl I saw in Glasgow and blended with Betty Boop cartoons I had been watching.

I couldn't ink her hands right...I spent the best part of an hour trying to do it, got frustrated and decided to give her weird mitten-claws instead.

I got pretty badly sunburnt recently (yes, quite possible in Scotland!) - never fall asleep in the sun with low-factor suncream.

She started off as a no-one-in-particular, then Sody, then I screwed up in the inking and now shes a no-one-in-particular who looks vaguely Sody-like.

These are all really boring generic...and facing the same way...and all girls....

You can tell the girly-art influences here. Nothing new or exciting. I wish I could come up with some different, these all just look like poor imitations. Like I said last post, inspiration is needed! But none of my usual methods are working...I've obviously been relying on looking at the same artists' work/same dvds too much, andneed something new....

Crappy yearbook comic

I was asked to do a "Day in the life of a Calderside Sixth-year" comic for the year book. I had to rush it a bit, but it came out okay, I suppose. Well, that's what I thought when I finished it. I'm already starting to cringe at it. It's the way I am.

I wanted to practice all the different cartoony techniques, but alas, no time. I didn't even have time to think of anything particularily funny (that would be clean enough to put in).

I didn't see much reason to put in the text and colour version - it's nothing much. I like the lineart better anyway.

Self-portrait thing - one of the ones when I'm being kind to myself. My hair can only be described as a mane.

Bret and Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords, and David Tennant (current Dr Who). By the looks of it I couldn't decide whether I wanted to draw realistic portraits or caricatures.

You may notice she has lost her right arm - it was in a tragic Photoshop accident. But don't bring it up - it's a touchy subject for her. She can still put on a brave face regardless, wee soul.

This one is about four or five months old, but I still kinda like it. Probably drawn during Maths.
